Career Description
Fort Abercrombie was the first permanent United States military fort established in what was to become North Dakota. It served as a hub for several major transportation routes through the northern plains. Learn more about the Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site here. Job Duration: May 27, 2025 - September 4, 2025Weekly work hours up to 24 preferred, hours and duration subject to negotiation.



The historical interpreter will execute their responsibilities with a positive attitude, neat appearance, and friendly and pleasant demeanor toward all visitors at the state historic site. The successful applicant will:Actively listen to visitors, answer their questions, welcome and orient them, lead hands-on activities, assist with special events, and lead guided tours.Interpret site history enjoyably and accurately, making good use of research, training, and appropriate language and hands-on skills.Familiarize visitors with the State Historical Society mission and its other state historic sites.Assess and provide for visitors' special needs, such as appropriate services for the elderly, handicapped, and foreign visitors.Provide excellent customer service.Clean and tidy facilities including work areas, public areas, and bathrooms. Perform other light maintenance tasks which might include watering and weeding outdoor plantings, dusting, emptying trash receptacles, and painting.Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to communicate with groups and individuals of diverse ages, interests, and perspectives, using appropriate language and hands-on skills.Ability to learn site history.Ability to work every other weekend per month. Ability to accurately complete required forms such as timesheets, till counts, reservations, etc. Self-motivated.Must be at least 16 years old.All applicants are responsible for their own housing.

Career Description




Landscape maintenance, including lawn mowing, tree pruning, and weeding in all areas on site as needed.Remove trash from all locations and transport to designated dumpster.Perform cleaning duties as assigned, including dusting, sweeping, mopping, floor waxing, vacuuming, restroom and window cleaning, garbage removal, and others as they arise.Assist site staff with small maintenance projects and cleaning projects as required.Maintain machinery and tools in proper working order.Keep inventory of supplies on hand and inform supervisor of needs.Perform some painting of structures, both interior and exterior.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 16 years of age.Must have experience with gas and diesel-powered equipment.Must be able to lift/move 50 pounds on a regular basis.Must be able to operate a lawnmower.Must have a current driver's license to be able to operate the site vehicle.Ability to work flexible hours and weekends.Must be able communicate with guests and coworkers.Must have experience in planning maintenance operations.All applicants are responsible for their own housing.
