BISMARCK – Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring has announced that the North Dakota Department of Agriculture has funding available through the Specialty Crop Block Grant program for teachers in grades 3-5 to incorporate SunButter® kits into their curriculum.
“The North Dakota Department of Agriculture is seeking teachers interested in bringing this STEM learning opportunity into their classrooms,” Goehring said. “Students will learn about sunflowers, honey and how North Dakota is the No. 1 producer in the nation for both commodities.”
Students will make homemade sunflower seed butter and taste commercially-available SunButter®.
Teachers interested in receiving SunButter® kits may go to https://www.ndda.nd.gov/sunbutter for full details and to fill out an application. Applications must be submitted in electronic form by Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024. Successful applicants will be notified via email shortly thereafter. Kits are on a first come, first-serve basis as supplies are limited.
Questions may be directed to Local Foods Marketing Specialist Katrina Hanenberg at 701-328-2659 or kmhanenberg@nd.gov.
Teachers will have until Jan. 10, 2025, to use the kits and provide the education to their students.
